ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Pericoronitis of wisdom teeth along the jaw diffusion may be a rare diffusion pathway, which can cause osteomyelitis and maxillofacial space infection serious complications. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-years-old male patient presented with swelling and discomfort of the right cheek for more than 1 year. The patient was previously healthy and denied various systemic medical histories. The patient's face was asymmetric, the right cheek was swollen, and the depressed edema was seen on the surface of the masseter area of the right parotid gland. Based on the preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging results, the initial diagnosis was: centralized osteomyelitis of the jaws. The surgical plan was minimally invasive extraction 48 and localized debridement of the lesion area. After three months of follow-up, the patient's symptoms were significantly improved without recurrence. DISCUSSION: Pericoronitis of wisdom teeth along the jaw diffusion is a rare diffusion pathway, which can lead to secondary jaw osteomyelitis, the treatment of which consists of lesion debridement, dead bone curettage and antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSION: Through literature review and summary of the diagnosis and treatment process of this case, such cases should be diagnosed as early as possible and conservative treatment should be actively used to avoid the occurrence of complications. In addition, the special diffusion pathway of this case may provide a new theoretical basis for the source of infection of central jaw osteomyelitis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The integration of curriculum is an important approach for enhancing medical education and facilitating interdisciplinary connections among students. This study aimed to develop a new morphological integrated teaching mode for undergraduate stomatology education by combining stomatological pathology and radiology courses with instructional media. METHODS: In total, 63 undergraduates were included in this study and divided into three groups: traditional (Group T; the control group) and two experimental groups: KoPa WiFi EDU (Group K), and KoPa WiFi EDU-cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) (Group K-C). All participants attended a 2-h lecture on periapical cysts and completed the first theoretical test. Subsequently, they underwent a 4-h experimental training session on the pathology and radiology of periapical cysts using different teaching methods. Following the training, participants completed the second theoretical test and underwent the first image-reading skill evaluation. After a 3-month period, participants completed the third theoretical test and underwent the second image-reading skill evaluation. The effectiveness of the teaching methods was assessed by analyzing the differences in theoretical test and experimental skill evaluation scores. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the first theoretical outcomes among three groups (p > 0.05). However, the second theoretical scores, the first objective evaluation scores, and the first subjective evaluation scores were significantly higher in the integrated teaching mode (3D teaching mode with the KoPa WiFi EDU and CBCT: 89.29 ± 4.55, 81.00 ± 8.15, and 61.57 ± 5.52, respectively; 2D teaching mode with the KoPa WiFi EDU system: 80.43 ± 3.41, 73.00 ± 8.01, and 55.67 ± 5.66, respectively) than in the traditional teaching mode (72.57 ± 3.84, 69.38 ± 4.91, and 48.67 ± 5.54, respectively) (p < 0.05). Moreover, the long-term teaching effect of the integrated mode was better than that of the traditional mode (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The morphology-based integrated teaching mode combining pathology and radiology aroused student enthusiasm for learning, and resulted in enhanced learning outcomes in dental experimental education.

ABSTRACT

Despite considerable advances in artificial bone tissues, the absence of neural network reconstruction in their design often leads to delayed or ineffective bone healing. Hence, we propose a multilayer hierarchical lithium (Li)-doped titanium dioxide structure, constructed through microarc oxidation combined with alkaline heat treatment. This structure can induce the sustained release of Li ions, mimicking the environment of neurogenic osteogenesis characterized by high brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. During in vitro experiments, the structure enhanced the differentiation of Schwann cells (SCs) and the growth of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and mouse embryo osteoblast progenitor cells (MC3T3-E1). Additionally, in a coculture system, the SC-conditioned media markedly increased alkaline phosphatase expression and the formation of calcium nodules, demonstrating the excellent potential of the material for nerve-induced bone regeneration. In an in vivo experiment based on a rat distal femoral lesion model, the structure substantially enhanced bone healing by increasing the density of the neural network in the tissue around the implant. In conclusion, this study elucidates the neuromodulatory pathways involved in bone regeneration, providing a promising method for addressing bone deformities.

ABSTRACT

Flexible optoelectronic platforms, which integrate optoelectronic devices on a flexible substrate, are promising in more complex working environments benefiting from the mechanical flexibility. Herein, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a flexible GaN-based vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in the ultraviolet A (UVA) range was demonstrated by using a thin-film transfer process based on laser lift-off (LLO) and spin-coating of a flexible substrate. The lasing wavelength is 376.5 nm with a linewidth of 0.6 nm and threshold energy of 98.4 nJ/pulse, corresponding to a threshold energy density of 13.9 mJ/cm2. The flexible substrate in this study is directly formed by spin-coating of photosensitive epoxy resin, which is much simplified and cost-effective, and a 2-in. wafer scale GaN-based membrane can be successfully transferred to a flexible substrate through this method. Such flexible UVA VCSELs are promising for the development of next-generation flexible and wearable technologies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Roux-en-Y reconstruction is a common anastomosis technique during gastrectomy in gastric cancer. There is a lack of studies on gallstones after Roux-en-Y reconstruction gastrectomy. This study investigated the incidence and potential risk factors associated with gallstones after Roux-en-Y reconstructive gastrectomy in gastric cancer. METHODS: The study analyzed data from gastric cancer who underwent radical gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y reconstruction at two hospitals between January 2014 and December 2020. The patients fall into distal and total gastrectomy groups based on the extent of gastrectomy. The cumulative event probability curve was plotted using the Kaplan-Meier, and differences in gallstone between groups were evaluated using the Log-Rank. Propensity score matching was applied to construct a balanced total versus distal gastrectomies cohort. A Cox regression was employed to analyze the risk factors for gallstones after Roux-en-Y reconstructive gastrectomy in gastric cancer. Further subgroup analysis was performed. RESULTS: Five hundred thirty-one patients were included in this study, 201 in the distal gastrectomy group and 330 in the total gastrectomy. During the follow-up, gallstones occurred in 170 cases after gastrectomy, of which 145 cases accounted for 85.29% of all stones in the first two years after surgery. Then, to reduce the impact of bias, a 1:1 propensity score matching analysis was performed on the two groups of patients. A total of 344 patients were evaluated, with each subgroup comprising 172 patients. In the matched population, the Cox regression analysis revealed that females, BMI ≥23 kg/m 2 , total gastrectomy, No.12 lymph node dissection, and adjuvant chemotherapy were risk factors for gallstones after Roux-en-Y reconstructive gastrectomy. Subgroup analysis showed that open surgery further increased the risk of gallstones after total gastrectomy. CONCLUSION: The incidence of gallstones increased significantly within 2years after Roux-en-Y reconstructive gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Patients with these risk factors should be followed closely after gastrectomy to avoid symptomatic gallstones.

ABSTRACT

Arsenic poses a serious harm to the natural environment and human health. Lignin decorated with quaternary ammonium and metal ion can effectively adsorb arsenic from aqueous solution. Zn2+/quaternary ammonium lignin was synthesized by quaternization and metallization from lignin with 3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride and ZnCl2. The morphology, functional groups and chemical compositions of adsorbent were identified by SEM-EDS, FTIR and XRD. The effects such as pH, initial As(V) concentration, contact time and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption capacity were investigated in batch system. The adsorption mechanism was explored by SEM-EDS, FTIR and XPS. It was shown that the adsorbent was rough and contained a large amount of quaternary ammonium and Zn2+. Zn2+/quaternary ammonium lignin exhibited much strong affinity towards As(V) with the maximum adsorption capacity of 70.38 mg·g-1 at 25 °C, oscillation rate of 180 r·min-1, pH of 5, initial As(V) concentration of 100 mg·L-1, contact time of 30 min and 1 g·L-1 Zn2+/quaternary ammonium lignin. The adsorption could be well described by Langmuir model and quasi-second-order kinetic model, indicating the monolayer homogeneous chemisorption nature. As(V) was adsorbed through electrostatic attraction of Zn2+ and ion exchange between H2AsO4- and Cl-.

ABSTRACT

Isocorydine (ICD) exhibits strong antitumor effects on numerous human cell lines. However, the anticancer activity of ICD against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been reported. The anticancer activity, migration and invasion ability, and changes in the cytoskeleton morphology and mechanical properties of ICD in OSCC were determined. Changes in the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), ATP, and mitochondrial respiratory chain complex enzymes Ⅰ-Ⅳ in cancer cells were studied. ICD significantly inhibited the proliferation of oral tongue squamous cells (Cal-27), with an IC50 of 0.61 mM after 24 h of treatment. The invasion, migration, and adhesion of cancer cells were decreased, and cytoskeletal actin was deformed and depolymerized. In comparison to an untreated group, the activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex enzymes I-IV were significantly decreased by 50.72%, 27.39%, 77.27%, and 73.89%, respectively. The ROS production increased, the MMP decreased by 43.65%, and the ATP content decreased to 17.1 ± 0.001 (mmol/mL); ultimately, the apoptosis rate of cancer cells increased up to 10.57% after 24 h of action. These findings suggest that ICD exerted an obvious anticancer activity against OSCC and may inhibit Cal-27 proliferation and growth by causing mitochondrial dysfunction and interrupting cellular energy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma is extremely rare in clinical practice. These cells consist of both epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Patient-derived cell lines that maintain tumor characteristics are valuable tools for studying the molecular mechanisms associated with carcinosarcoma. However, cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma cell lines are not available in cell banks. AIM: To establish and characterize a new extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma cell line, namely CBC2T-2. METHODS: We conducted a short tandem repeat (STR) test to confirm the identity of the CBC2T-2 cell line. Furthermore, we assessed the migratory and invasive properties of the cells and performed clonogenicity assay to evaluate the ability of individual cells to form colonies. The tumorigenic potential of CBC2T-2 cells was tested in vivo using non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient (NOD/SCID) mice. The cells were injected subcutaneously and tumor formation was observed. In addition, immunohistochemical analysis was carried out to examine the expression of epithelial marker CK19 and mesenchymal marker vimentin in both CBC2T-2 cells and xenografts. The CBC2T-2 cell line was used to screen the potential therapeutic effects of various clinical agents in patients with cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma. Lastly, whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify genetic alterations and screen for somatic mutations in the CBC2T-2 cell line. RESULTS: The STR test showed that there was no cross-contamination and the results were identical to those of the original tissue. The cells showed round or oval-shaped epithelioid cells and mesenchymal cells with spindle-shaped or elongated morphology. The cells exhibited a high proliferation ratio with a doubling time of 47.11 h. This cell line has migratory, invasive, and clonogenic abilities. The chromosomes in the CBC2T-2 cells were polyploidy, with numbers ranging from 69 to 79. The subcutaneous tumorigenic assay confirmed the in vivo tumorigenic ability of CBC2T-2 cells in NOD/SCID mice. CBC2T-2 cells and xenografts were positive for both the epithelial marker, CK19, and the mesenchymal marker, vimentin. These results suggest that CBC2T-2 cells may have both epithelial and mesenchymal characteristics. The cells were also used to screen clinical agents in patients with cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma, and a combination of paclitaxel and gemcitabine was found to be the most effective treatment option. CONCLUSION: We established the first human cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma cell line, CBC2T-2, with stable biogenetic traits. This cell line, as a research model, has a high clinical value and would facilitate the understanding of the pathogenesis of cholangiocarcinoma sarcoma.

ABSTRACT

Ga2 O3 -based Ultraviolet-C photodetector (UVCPD) is considered the most promising UVCPD at present and is divided into Metal-Semiconductor-Metal (MSM) and PN junction types. Compared with MSM-PDs, PN-PDs exhibit superior transient performance due to the built-in electric field. However, current Ga2 O3 -based PN-PDs lack consideration for carrier collection and electric field distribution. In this study, PN-PDs with an interdigital n-Ga2 O3 layer and finger electrodes are fabricated on p-GaN/n-Ga2 O3 epilayers. Ultrafast response times of 31 µs (1/e decay) and 2.76 µs (fast component) are realized, which outperforms all Ga2 O3 UVC-PDs up to now. Under 0 V self-powered, the responsivity (0.25 A W-1 ) of interdigital PD is enhanced by the interdigital electrode structure due to increasing carriers' collection length. Under bias, the performances of interdigital PD with 41.7 A W-1 responsivity and 8243 selection ratios are significantly elevated by enhancing the built-in electric field in the Ga2 O3 region, which is 34.76 and 39.4 times those of traditional PDs, respectively. The intrinsic enhancing mechanism of interdigital structure is also investigated by interdigital PDs with various electrode spacings and perimeters. In summary, this paper not only reports a highly performed interdigitated structure p-GaN/n-Ga2 O3 UVCPDs, but also provides guidelines for structure design in Ga2 O3 -based PN-PDs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Recent studies have shown that bile acids are essential in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pathology, and cholecystectomy has direct effects on bile acid metabolism. However, whether cholecystectomy increases the risk of IBS remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between cholecystectomy and IBS risk in the UK Biobank (UKB). Methods: This study is a prospective analysis of 413,472 participants who were free of IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or common benign digestive tract diseases. We identified incidents of IBS through self-reporting or links to primary healthcare and hospitalization data. We evaluated hazard ratios (HRs) adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviours, comorbidities, and medications. Results: During a median follow-up period of 12.7 years, we observed 15,503 new cases of IBS. Participants with a history of cholecystectomy had a 46% higher risk of IBS than those without (HR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.32-1.60), and further subtype analysis showed that the risk of IBS with diarrhoea was significantly higher than the risk of IBS without diarrhoea (HR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.30-2.25 vs. HR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.28-1.58). The overall covariate-adjusted HRs for IBS were similar between the group with both cholecystectomy and gallstones (HR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.32-1.58) and the group with cholecystectomy without gallstones (HR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.36-1.67) when the group without both cholecystectomy and gallstones was used as a reference. The overall covariate-adjusted HR was not significantly different in the group without cholecystectomy with gallstones (HR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.95-1.47). The positive association of cholecystectomy with IBS risk did not change when stratifying the data based on age, sex, BMI, smoking, alcohol consumption, healthy diet, quality sleep, physical activity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, mental illness, NSAID intake, or acid inhibitor intake. Sensitivity analyses, including propensity score matching analysis and lagging the exposure for two or four years, indicated that the effects were robust. Conclusion: Cholecystectomy was associated with a higher risk of IBS, especially IBS with diarrhoea. Additional prospective randomized controlled and experimental studies are warranted to further validate the association and to explore the relevant biological mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Room temperature low threshold lasing of green GaN-based vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) was demonstrated under continuous wave (CW) operation. By using self-formed InGaN quantum dots (QDs) as the active region, the VCSEL emitting at 524.0 nm has a threshold current density of 51.97 A cm-2, the lowest ever reported. The QD epitaxial wafer featured with a high IQE of 69.94% and the δ-function-like density of states plays an important role in achieving low threshold current. Besides, a short cavity of the device (~ 4.0 λ) is vital to enhance the spontaneous emission coupling factor to 0.094, increase the gain coefficient factor, and decrease the optical loss. To improve heat dissipation, AlN layer was used as the current confinement layer and electroplated copper plate was used to replace metal bonding. The results provide important guidance to achieving high performance GaN-based VCSELs.

ABSTRACT

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is often used as a current spreading layer in the GaN-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). However, the absorption coefficient of ITO is significant, which reduces the laser output power, raises the threshold, and makes VCSELs hardly lase in the ultraviolet range. To find a transparent conductive structure that can replace ITO, we propose a periodic p-AlGaN/u-GaN/p-GaN structure. In the simulation of light-emitting diodes, the optimized parameter is obtained with multi-period 10 nm p-Al0.1Ga0.9N/2 nm u-GaN/8 nm p-GaN combined with n-GaN/n-Al0.2Ga0.8N in the n region. Applying the structure to 435 nm VCSELs and comparing it to a common VCSEL with the ITO current spreading layer, it can be found that the new structure reduces the threshold from 9.17 to 3.06 kA/cm2. The laser power increases from 1.33 to 15.4 mW. The optimized structure has a high laser power and a lower threshold, which can be used in future investigations.

ABSTRACT

This investigation explored the association between indoor environmental factors and childhood asthma in Yancheng, China. Asthma case (201 children with recurrent asthma) and control cohorts (242 healthy subjects) were recruited from a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) Hospital in Yancheng city, based on the results of an ISAAC questionnaire. Questionnaires regarding environmental risk factors were completed by the child's primary caregivers. To compare data on environmental VOCs and formaldehyde contents between asthma and control cohorts, we passively conducted a 10-day indoor and outdoor sampling. Breastfeeding was a major protective indoor environmental factor for recurrent asthma (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.368, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.216-0.627). Our analysis revealed that childhood recurrent asthma was intricately linked to a family history of asthma. Recurrent asthma was also associated with passive smoking [aOR2.115 (95%-CI 1.275-3.508)]. Analogous correlations were observed between household renovation or new furniture introduction and recurrent asthma [aOR3.129(95%-CI1.542-6.347)]. Benzene and formaldehyde were present in all examined homes. Enhanced benzene and formaldehyde concentrations were strongly evident among asthma versus control cohorts, and they were strongly correlated with augmented recurrent asthma risk. Home environment heavily regulates incidences of childhood recurrent asthma. Hence, actions against the indoor environmental risk factors described in this study may assist in the prevention of recurrent asthma among children.

ABSTRACT

Flexible optoelectronics is a technique for fabricating optoelectronic devices on a flexible substrate. Compared with conventional devices, flexible optoelectronic devices can be used in more complex working environments benefiting from the mechanical flexibility. Herein, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a flexible GaN-based microdisk laser on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate in the ultraviolet A (UVA) range was demonstrated by using thin film transfer process based on laser lift-off (LLO). The lasing wavelength is 370.5 nm with a linewidth of 0.15 nm and a threshold power density of 200 kW/cm2. Additionally, a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was deposited on the backside of the microdisk as the bottom mirror between GaN microdisk and PET substrate, which can provide better mode confinement inside the microdisk and increases the oscillation intensity. The lasing wavelength of the flexible laser shows a 2-nm redshift under different bending curvature of the substrate, which is promising for applications such as mechanical sensing.

ABSTRACT

Functionalized lignin-based biosorbent has become popular in wastewater treatment and extraction of valuable metals. Amination and metallization modification can effectively improve the adsorption performance of adsorbent. Zn2+/polyamine lignin for adsorption of W(VI) was synthesized by quaternization, amination and metallization from lignin with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride, tetraethylenepentamine and ZnCl2. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR and XRD. The adsorption performance of Zn2+/polyamine lignin for W(VI) was investigated in batch system. The adsorption mechanism was revealed by zeta potential, SEM-EDS and FTIR and XPS. It was shown that Zn2+/polyamine lignin exhibited great adsorption capacity at pH of 2, 25 °C, oscillation rate of 400 r/min, initial tungsten concentration of 700 mg·L-1 and adsorption time of 720 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of 0.5 g·L-1 Zn2+/polyamine lignin for W(VI) reached 488.28 mg·g-1. The adsorption followed Langmuir model and quasi-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption was monolayer homogeneous chemisorption. W(VI) was adsorbed through electrostatic attraction of hydrogen bond and Zn2+, ion exchange with Cl- and coordination with -NH2. The adsorption capacity reduced by only 6.47 % after seven cycles of adsorption-desorption, which indicated that Zn2+/polyamine lignin had a great application prospect.

ABSTRACT

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common disorder, that burdens general well-being. Although the lung is connected to the upper respiratory tract, which is rich in microorganisms, no studies have reported the relationship between lung microbiota and AR. Mahuang Fuzi Xixin decoction (MFXD) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula that is widely used to treat AR in the clinic but its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that lung microbiota is associated with the pathogenesis of AR, and MFXD can improve AR by regulating microbiota dysbiosis. Methods: The ovalbumin-induced mouse AR model was used to evaluate the therapeutic effect of MFXD on AR. Then 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, and other molecular biology technology were used to clarify the effects of MFXD on lung microbes dysbiosis and AR progression. Further, the human nasal epithelial cell line (HNEpCs) was used to evaluate the protective effect of MFXD on epithelial barrier damage caused by specific pathogens. Results: MFXD decreased plasma histamine and IgE levels, ameliorated pathological damage, and diminished the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and occludin) in lung and nasal tissues. MFXD altered AR-induced microbiota dysbiosis in the lungs and also plasma metabolites. Oral administration of MFXD altered microbiota dysbiosis in lung and AR-associated metabolic disorders. The dominant bacteria in the lungs of AR mice damaged the airway barrier, and MFXD reversed this change. Conclusion: This study revealed the correlation between the lung microbiota and AR in the mice model. We confirmed that lung microbiota plays a vital role in AR and that MFXD reduced damage to the epithelial barrier of the lungs and nasal mucosa by regulating lung microbiota and plasma metabolism imbalances. Our research provides a reference for the effect of lung microbiota on AR and provides a new idea for the treatment of AR.

ABSTRACT

Simultaneously optimizing elementary steps, such as water dissociation, hydroxyl transferring, and hydrogen combination, is crucial yet challenging for achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Herein, Ru single atom-doped WO2 nanoparticles with atomically dispersed Ru-W pair sites (Ru-W/WO2 -800) are developed using a crystalline lattice-confined strategy, aiming to gain efficient alkaline HER. It is found that Ru-W/WO2 -800 exhibits remarkable HER activity, characterized by a low overpotential (11 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ), notable mass activity (5863 mA mg-1 Ru at 50 mV), and robust stability (500 h at 250 mA cm-2 ). The highly efficient activity of Ru-W/WO2 -800 is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ru-W sites through ensemble catalysis. Specifically, the W sites expedite rapid hydroxyl transferring and water dissociation, while the Ru sites accelerate the hydrogen combination process, synergistically facilitating the HER activity. This study opens a promising pathway for tailoring the coordination environment of atomic-scale catalysts to achieve efficient electro-catalysis.

ABSTRACT

The pathogenesis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the interactions between HNSCC and HPV remain unclear. Bioinformatics was used to analyze the gene expression dataset of HPV-associated HNSCC based on the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC were screened. Gene function enrichment, protein-protein interactions (PPI), survival analysis, and immune cell infiltration of DEGs were performed. Furthermore, the clinical data of HNSCC tissue samples were analyzed using immunohistochemistry. In total, 194 DEGs were identified. A PPI network was constructed and 10 hub genes (EREG, PLCG1, ERBB4, HBEGF, ZFP42, CBX6, NFKBIA, SOCS1, ATP2B2, and CEND1) were identified. Survival analysis indicated that low expression of SOCS1 was associated with worse overall survival. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that SOCS1 expression was higher in HPV-negative HNSCC than in HPV-positive HNSCC, and there was a positive correlation between SOCS1 expression and patient survival. This study provides new information on biological targets that may be relevant to the molecular mechanisms underpinning the occurrence and development of HNSCC. SOCS1 may play an important role in the interaction between HPV and HNSCC and serve as a potential biomarker for future therapeutic targets.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the difference in the therapeutic effect on acute ankle sprain treated with the combination of surrounding needling and cold compression in comparison of the conventional cold compression. METHODS: The patients with acute ankle sprain were randomly divided into control group (33 cases) and observation group (35 cases). In the first 3 days of treatment, the conventional cold compression was used in the control group, while the surrounding needling technique of acupuncture was combined with cold compression in the observation group. Separately, along the distal-lateral side of the leg, and the lateral sides of the heel and the dorsal part of the foot, 3 or 4 needles were inserted in each part, total 9 to 12 needles, toward the center of swelling and pain site, and distributed in a fan shape. The needles were retained for 30 min and the acupuncture therapy was delivered once daily. Since the 4th day of treatment, the hot compress and the static stretching exercise of the ankle joint were adopted in the two groups, once daily for 1 week. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score for ankle pain and ankle swelling degree were compared between the two groups before and after 3-day treatment, as well as the score of American orthopedic foot and ankle society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scale was evaluated. RESULTS: After 3-day treatment, VAS score was decreased in both groups (P<0.01), and the score in the observation group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.01). Ankle swelling degree was relieved in both groups (P<0.01), and there was no significant difference between the two groups. After 1 week of treatment, the scores of AOFAS ankle-hindfoot scale were improved in both groups (P<0.01), and the score in the observation group was higher than the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Either the combined therapy of surrounding needling and cold compression or the conventional cold compression can effectively relieve pain and swelling induced by acute ankle sprain. The therapeutic effect of the combined therapy is superior to the conventional cold compression for the motor function improvement of ankle joint.
